1970: Birth of Marcos Evangelista de Moraes, better known as “Cafu,” who went on to become Brazil’s all-time appearances leader with 142 caps. Cafu also made history playing for Sao Paulo, Roma and Milan.1993: Liverpool sign Nigel Clough. Ahead of the second season of the Barclays Premier League, Liverpool manager Graeme Souness signed Clough from relegated Nottingham Forest.

Cricket1952: The worst start to an innings in Test history. In the first Test at Headingley, India would have fancied their chances when they began their second innings only 41 runs behind England. Fourteen balls later they were 0 for 4, and the game was as good as over.

1975: The beginning of the first Cricket World Cup.

1975: Birth of Shane Bond, former New Zealand cricketer and present bowling coach of the New Zealand national team. He was described as New Zealand’s best fast bowler since Sir Richard Hadlee.

Mahesh Bhupathi was born on this day in 1974.

Tennis1974: Birth of Mahesh Bhupathi, an Indian professional tennis player widely regarded as among the best doubles players in the world with 12 Grand Slam titles to his credit.

1981: Birth of Anna Kournikova, Russian American retired professional tennis player. Her beauty and celebrity status made her one of the best known tennis stars worldwide, despite her never winning a WTA singles title.
