Atkinson, Bovell shine in Swimming World Cup

Moscow, Oct 14 (IANS/CMC) Two of the Caribbean’s top swimmers won a medal-brace each on the third stop of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2013 here.

Alia Atkinson of Jamaica picked up silver and bronze medals over the weekend while Trinidadian George Bovell added two bronze medals to his tally on the circuit this year.

Atkinson was second in the 50 metres Breaststroke in a time of 29.33 seconds, behind Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania (28.89). The Jamaican swim queen also earned a place on the podium in the 100m Breaststroke, with her third-placed finish in 1:04.64.

Atkinson also missed out on a third medal when she finished fourth in the 50m backstroke in a time of 27.76 seconds.

Bovell took the bronze in the men’s 100m Individual Medley (IM) Saturday in 52.88 seconds, behind Vladimir Morozov of Russia (51.61) and Australian Kenneth To (51.83).

He followed that up with a third-placed finish in his favourite event Sunday – the 50m freestyle, Bovell was timed at 21.49, with Morozov taking the gold (20.59) and the silver to Roland Schoeman of South Africa (21.15).

Moscow was the third leg of the eight-nation tour of the World Cup, after Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Berlin (Germany). Other stops include Dubai, United Arab Emirates (Oct 17-18); Doha, Qatar (Oct 20-21); Singapore (Nov 5-6); Tokyo, Japan (Nov 9-10) and Beijing, China (Nov 13-14).
