IPTL: Manila Mavericks vs UAE Royals Preview

Can Tsonga take the Mavericks to victory?

After a convincing victory over home team Singapore Slammers, the Manila Mavericks will be hoping their great run of form continues on day 2. The UAE Royals will be hoping to overturn their miserable display last night against the Indian Aces.

Both teams are equal on points, five points behind leaders Indian Aces. A win will close that gap, but it is anybody’s to claim with the way the tournament is going.

The Royals ran out 29-24 winners in Manila. Will it be a repeat or will the Mavericks rise to the occasion in Sinapore?

Men’s Singles

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is on the back of a tough win against Tomas Berdych and it looks to be a similar battle regardless of the opposition. Whether Cilic or Jaziri starts for the Royals remains to be seen. The US Open champion will no doubt prove to be a much tougher task for Tsonga than Jaziri, but expect a close contest either ways.

Women’s Singles

Kirsten Flipkens will take on Kristina Mladenovic in this set. Flipkens, will look to use her experience against 21-year-old Mladenovic. The young Frenchwoman was convinvingly beaten by Ana Ivanovic in her last match and the Royals will be hoping for her to bounce back in style. Flipkens on the other hand, was beaten in a shootout against World No. 1 Serena Williams. The Belgian is high on confidence and form and holds the edge in this set.

Men’s Doubles

The Mavericks hold an advantage in the men’s doubles tie with the experienced Huey and the powerful Tsonga in their corner. The Royal’s pair of Marin Cilic and Nenad Zimonjic suffered a demolishing defeat against the Indian Aces. Low on confidence, the Royals need to show their mettle after a poor day at the office. It will be interesting to see whether Tsonga manages to power through the Mavericks.

Mixed Doubles

The experienced pair of Kirsten Flipkens and Daniel Nestor will be a big plus for the Manila Mavericks. The Royals have Kristina Mladenovic and Nenad Zimonjic in their end in what promises to be an evenly contested set. Zimonjic needs to up his game for the Royals to stand a chance. Mladenovic and Zimonjic won their previous set against the Mavericks in Manila but with different oppositions this time, it will be a different story.

Legend’s Singles

In the absence of Carlos Moya, Mark Philippoussis has made the most of the opportunity. The Scud has won both his encounters so far and is looking in great form for the Mavericks. Goran Ivanisevic on the other hand, suffered a heavy defeat against Fabrice Santoro last night. The left-handed Wimbledon champion will look to find his earlier form of the tournametn to match the lieks of Philippoussis in this set.
