Caroline Wozniacki shares update on dealing with rheumatoid arthritis

After numerous doctor appointments, blood tests, and months of suffering, Caroline Wozniacki was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, an incurable inflammatory disease that causes stiff and painful joints.

The former World No.1 battled rheumatoid arthritis in the final few seasons of her career, and since her diagnosis in 2018, she has aggressively increased awareness about the ailment in the hopes of assisting others.

Yet, unlike the more common osteoarthritis, which is caused by body wear and tear, the disease often manifests at a younger age. Researchers believe that while the specific cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, it is most likely inherited.

During a recent Q&A with fans, the Danish tennis star disclosed that her rheumatoid arthritis is under control and that she has been playing a lot more tennis recently, albeit for recreational purposes.

"I have recently played more and enjoying it. My RA is pretty controlled at the moment," Wozniacki said on Instagram.

Caroline Wozniacki's rheumatologist promised her that she could live a normal life and even continue to play professional tennis if she began therapy. Coupled with a new anti-inflammatory diet, extra sleep, avoiding stress, and frequent therapeutic massages, aided her return to the court, and the Australian Open champion won the China Open in October 2018, one month after her diagnosis.
