Australian tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios split with his coach Todd Larkham with less than a week left for Wimbledon.

Kyrgios’ grass court season started on a bad note after his first round loss at Queen’s club to French Open champion Stan Wawrinka. He later withdrew from the Nottingham Open with illness.

The 21-year-old announced on Tuesday that it was a mutual agreement between the two.

“It’s never an easy decision to end a coaching relationship and to do so prior to the start of a Grand Slam is even more difficult,” Kyrgios said . “But I feel that this is the right decision for me at this time.”

Kyrgios will be helped by his team and Tennis Australia during the next fortnight at Wimbledon. The Australian will announce his next coach after the grass major.

“I’ve worked with Todd on and off for many years and he has helped me immensely,” Kyrgios said. “I am very grateful for everything Todd has taught me and helped me with, especially during the last year.

“While our working relationship has ended, Todd and I will remain friends as he has been a very important person in my life. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Todd for everything he has done for me, both personally and professionally, and wish him the best.”

Larkham worked with Kyrgios for seven years before re-joining his team after the Australian’s upset win over Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of Wimbledon last year.
