Novak Djokovic crowned US Open Champion, wins 3rd major of the year

Novak Djokovic defeated defending champion Rafael Nadal to win his third major of the year at the Flushing Meadows last night.

Djokovic the US Open 2011 Winner

The World No.1 captured the title with a dominating scoreline of 6-2,6-3,6-7,6-1. Exactly a year after losing the very same final to Nadal, Djokovic has come back with a massive win to culminate his fantastic year at the pinnacle of Tennis.

The year on the whole has been fantastic for the Serb. Many consider his performances on par with Roger Federer’s 2007. Djokovic was defeated only twice this whole year with a scoreline of 64 wins to 2 losses. He lifted the cup on 10 occasions and three of them were in Majors.

The match however was very closely contested despite what the scoreline suggests. Earlier in the second set, Nadal’s service game lasted close to 17 minutes with Djokovic finally breaking. From that point on, it looked as if Nadal will never recover.

Djokovic wins the 17 minute game.

However, in the third set, Nadal came back from a break down to win the set in the tie breaker. In the fourth set, Djokovic played smart. He took a medical time-out and made Nadal wait for around 10 minutes. When the match resumed, Djokovic was fresher and he wrapped up the game and therefore the match 6-1.

Djokovic poses after winning the title

This was Djokovic sixth straight win over Nadal in as many meetings. He read Nadal better than anyone else and that proves why he is the World No.1. The perspective is simple for Rafael Nadal or any other tennis player now. Novak Djokovic is playing the tennis of his life and it really does not matter what you do, he is going for the kill. This is probably one of the finest streaks that the world of Sports has witnessed.

Last year this same time, we were talking about how Nadal would easily break Federer’s record of 16 majors but after six straight final defeats to Djokovic, it looks as if the record would stand for a relatively longer time after all.

Djokovic was always a third wheel to Nadal and Federer, when asked about his sudden dominance over them; he replied “I guess it just clicked in my head,”

“I was always trying to wait for their mistakes and not having that positive attitude and believing I could win,” referring to Nadal and Federer. He also said that the 2010 US Open defeat was the changing point of his career.

Finally, he said that the winner is the person who believes in victory more. True, isn’t it? We will all be victors if we had believed in it. Djokovic is the new king of Tennis and there is nothing that you can do to take it away from him!
