Wimbledon 2015: Maria Sharapova reaches second round with a comfortable win over Johanna Konta

Maria Sharapova attempts a forehand in her win over Johanna Konta in the first round

Maria Sharapova progressed to the second round of the Wimbledon Championships with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Johanna Konta.

The Russian came into Wimbledon without playing any lead up tournament after losing in the fourth round of Roland Garros to Lucie Safarova. Her serve was a little tight in the first set which included a couple of double faults. Sharapova converted both her break point opportunities giving very little chance to Konta to make a comeback.

Konta did break early in the second set, but the 2004 champion broke right back with some fierce ground strokes. The No. 4 seed won 67% points on her first serve and hit 15 winners to make light work of home favorite and British No. 2 Konta.

Sharapova will face Richel Hogencamp in the second round.
