Mumbai, 25 June – With the world’s biggest tennis tournament right around the corner, interest in the players and debates on whether the defending champions will retain their titles have reached new heights. Time will decide who will be this year’s Grand Slam winner, but the people’s choice for this season has been declared.

Content discovery platform Outbrain today released data providing insight into who is the most popular tennis player online worldwide. Wawrinka is, combined on average, the most written and read about tennis player, leading the charts in India and taking 18% of the total global interest.

The world’s number one and two seeds in the ATP ranking, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, accumulated 10.6% and 10.8% respectively during the run-up to the tournament, while British hopeful Andy Murray is climbing up the popularity rank bagging the fifth position with 9.9%.

The key revelations from the analysis are:

– Despite Nadal’s fall in the ATP rankings, he still remains the most written about tennis player worldwide (26%)

– Stan Wawrinka seems to be the hot favourite for Wimbledon, with 18% global audience online interest.

– Although in the UK Murray fairs slightly better in terms of online consumption (44% of UK page views), Spanish David Ferrer is the Brit’s hot favourite, averaging 24% in terms of page views to stories compared with Murray at 11.5%

*The methodology used to arrive at the results was comparison of figures based on content consumption with the stories published about the Top 10 ranking tennis players (as listed in the ATP rankings) and measured across Outbrain’s global network between May 11 and June 15, 2015.
