Mitch Marner landing spots: 3 destinations for the Toronto Maple Leafs forward if he gets traded

Tampa Bay Lightning v Toronto Maple Leafs - Game Two
Mitch Marner has a no-move clause that kicks in on July 1

Mitch Marner has two years left on his contract but with his full no-move clause kicking in on July 1, he could be moved before then.

Marner is one of the best players in the NHL, but the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Marner in particular, have struggled at times in the playoffs and the Leafs may decide to move on.

With that, here are three possible destinations for Mitch Marner.

#1. Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes are currently in the Eastern Conference Finals - but are down 3-0 against the Florida Panthers - and don't need a ton of help but Mitch Marner could help their offense a ton.

The Hurricanes have just over $26 million in cap space heading into next season, with 15 players signed. They will be able to take in the approximately $11 million that Marner is slated to make next season as a result of this.

The Hurricanes are clearly in win-now mode and in the series against the Panthers, their offense has fallen short. Adding a skilled winger in Marner who creates offense makes a ton of sense. Carolina also has plenty of draft picks and young players to move in the trade.

#2. Arizona Coyotes

Similar to Auston Matthews' potential landing spots, the Arizona Coyotes should be heavily interested in whoever the Toronto Maple Leafs decide to move.

The Coyotes need a superstar and Mitch Marner fits the bill. As well, Arizona has plenty of cap space to fit Marner in, while the Canadian is just 26 years old so he is young enough to fit in with the Coyotes' core which is very young.

Arizona likely won't be a Cup contender for a bit, but Marner would be the face of the franchise and can help the Coyotes get back to the playoffs next season.

#3. New Jersey Devils

New Jersey made it to the second round of the 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs but lost in five games to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Devils have lots of cap space (an estimated $34 million), but if they re-sign Timo Meier, who they acquired at the trade deadline, they will likely be out of the running to sign Marner.

However, if the Devils decide to pursue Mitch Marner, they have plenty of cap room and assets to do so. New Jersey possesses first-round picks in 2024 and 2025, and they can also trade young players like Jesper Bratt, Yegor Sharangovich, and Kevin Bahl to make the deal worthwhile for Toronto.
