He went to The Ensworth School, where he got limited game time in his first three years of varsity basketball. In his senior campaign, Lanier posted 22.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game and was named the team captain. Following his prep career, Lanier received scholarship offers from Campbell and North Florida. He began his collegiate journey with the Ospreys and played four seasons with the program. In four years, Lanier saw action in 104 games and averaged 8.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game (via Yahoo).

However, after four seasons at North Florida, Lanier decided to transfer to Tennessee for his final year of eligibility in 2024. Lanier saw action in 38 games and averaged 18 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists for the Volunteers. In the 2024-25 campaign, Lanier recorded a season-high 29 points in the win over Arkansas. In February 2025, Lanier was named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Midseason Top 20 Watch List. In 2025, he was named an NABC Third Team All-American, the Sporting News Third Team All-American, a Wooden Award All-American, and a Jerry West Award Honoree.
