Powell participated in games like the 2024 McDonald's All-American Game, the Jordan Brand Classic game, and the Iverson Classic. He earned the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (NCBCA) All-State selection twice. His high school achievements include earning a spot in the all-state first team twice in 2023 and 2024. Powell received the Mid-Carolina 1A/2A Conference Player of the Year in 2024 and won the 3A Central Conference Player of the Year award in 2023.

Drake Powell had a remarkable career at Northwood High School under head coach Matt Brown. As a senior, Powell averaged 17.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. He made 57% from the field, 41% from three-point range, and 82% from the free-throw line. Northwood completed 16-0 in conference play and made the regional semifinals in 2024. Powell was a key player for Northwood as he led the team second in the state championship twice in 2021 and 2023. In his final year, he registered 29 points with 13 rebounds in the season opener against North Moore, 30 points with 12 rebounds in the John Wall Invitational game against Richmond. As a sophomore, he averaged 18.6 points, seven rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Playing Powell against Michigan State, he registered points in double figures, with a season-high of 18 points.
