His parents, Wallace Davis and Mary Babers, divorced when he was a child. He was primarily raised by his mother. Draymond joined Saginaw High School in Saginaw, Michigan.

After completing his studies, Draymond enrolled at Michigan State after signing a letter of intent in November 2017. He originally joined his college in 2008 and played college basketball in the 2008-09 season. At College, Draymond played basketball against several teams. During his senior year, he was named the Most Outstanding Player and Big Ten Player of the Year by the coaches in March 2012.
