Josh Hart graduated from Sidwell Friends School and led his high school team to a 22–9 record. As a senior, Hart averaged 24.3 points, 13.4 rebounds, and 2.8 steals per game. He played college basketball for Villanova University. As a guard, he led Villanova to win their 2016 NCAA title, where he averaged 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
