Killian Hayes is a 22 year old point guard who plays for the Detroit Pistons. He was drafted in 2020 with the seventh overall pick. His father also played basketball professionally due to which Hayes grew up in France. He entered the NBA with a lot of hype. Hayes has good handles, court vision, and can also rip the ball away from the player if they are not careful. His one skill set that stands out is his passing. Hayes can find open teammates, throw lobs, and run the team’s offense.

While his playmaking has translated to the NBA, the rest of his offensive arsenal has not. Since he is the primary ball-handler, Hayes commits quite a lot of turnovers and loses possession of the ball frequently.

Hayes has excellent length and build for his position and is a great on-the-ball defender when he wants to be. So far in his career, Hayes’ best season was the 2022/23 season where he averaged 10.3 points, 6.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game on 37.7% shooting, including 28.0% from 3-point line. Even though these numbers are not even close to an all-star level production that we expect from him, Hayes has improved.

Hayes has to have the confidence to take more jumpers and attempt more field goals because a modern day point guard has to make plays, but also score consistently. We have not seen Hayes be confident in his scoring abilities and this is limiting him quite a lot. However, he is very young and has a lot of time to turn things around.

Killian Hayes Height

Hayes is a tall point guard in the NBA and is listed at 6 feet 5 inches. His length, movement, and athleticism allow him to be a solid perimeter defender and shoot over most defenders easily.

Stats also show that the offensive rating is 8.5 points better when Hayes is off the floor and this is just a huge concern for Hayes going forward. He is in his fourth season in the league and has not improved much from his previous seasons. While he has all the tools to be successful, he needs to be much better than what he is currently.

Killian Hayes Wingspan

Killian Hayes has a 6 foot 8 inch wingspan which helps him guard multiple positions. He is a combo guard with great length and athleticism, but has not translated into the NBA. It is surprising because Hayes was a great player prior to the NBA when he was in France. He was the U16 Euro Championship’s MVP and was the seventh overall pick.

Hayes may also have been finding the transitioning to the NBA difficult as do many Euro players because the NBA is heavily reliant on athleticism and individual skills and is different compared to European basketball.

Killian Hayes Position

Hayes plays as the point guard who comes off-the-bench for the Detroit Pistons. Even though he plays quite a lot of minutes for a player who comes off the bench, Hayes’ production is far from efficient. Keeping in mind that is his just 22 years of age, the Pistons’ fans may need to be more patient for Hayes to develop further.
