Michael Malone is an American professional basketball coach currently coaching the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. Malone was born in the Astoria neighborhood of the New York borough of Queens. He is the son of former NBA head coach, Brendan Malone.

Malone went to Bishop Hendricken high school in Rhode Island and played college basketball at Loyola University in Maryland. and played for them from 1989-93. In 108 games in college, Malone averaged 3.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

While completing his degree at Loyola, Malone dipped his feet in the coaching world by being a high school assistant basketball coach at the Friends School, Baltimore. Post graduation, he joined Oakland University as an assistant coach of the Golden Grizzlies men’s basketball team under coach Greg Kampe. After this, Malone was hired as an assistant coach for the Providence Friars men’s basketball team. He held this position from 1995-98 before joining the University of Virginia as the director of basketball administration. He performed this job for one year before getting his first taste of coaching in the NBA world.

Which teams has Michael Malone coached?

In 2001, Malone first joined the New York Knicks as a coaching associate. He was mainly in charge of working with the players and coaching staff and editing scouting reports. He was promoted to assistant coach of the Knicks in 2003. He served as assistant coach for two years before being hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers. As an assistant for Cleveland, he helped the team reach their first Finals in franchise history, held the league-best record twice, and had five consecutive playoff appearances.

In the 2010-11 season, Malone joined the New Orleans Hornets as an assistant coach and as the primary defensive coordinator, he led them to the league’s most improved defense. After this, he joined the Golden State Warriors as an assistant coach under Mark Jackson, where he served till 2013.

In 2014, Malone got his big break. He was hired by the Sacramento Kings as their head coach and even though the team did not perform up to expectations, he was known as a ‘player’s coach’ and had a great relationship with all the players there. His abrupt firing in 2015 caused a huge outrage in the Sacramento Kings camp.

Malone, however, was not without a job for long as he was hired by the Denver Nuggets as their head coach the next season and has been there ever since. He has been responsible for building the team from the ground up and has made it into one of the most formidable teams in the league.

All his hard work and effort came to fruition this past season, when the Nuggets won their first NBA championship. Malone is now widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the league and with the likes of Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray in their primes, he will be looking to defend their title next season.
