Jamal Murray is a professional basketball point guard for the Denver Nuggets as of May 2025. Murray was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets and won the NBA championship in 2023. In the 2023 playoffs, Murray averaged 26.1 points, 92.6 per cent from the free throw line and shot 47.3 per cent from the field as per Basketball Reference. In his eighth season (2024-25), Murray has led the Nuggets to the playoffs and won the first round against the Los Angeles Clippers. In the regular season (2024-25), Murray played 67 games and averaged 21.4 points, 6.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.

Before the NBA, Jamal Murray played college basketball for one season with the University of Kentucky, where he averaged 20 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 2015-16, as per Sports Reference.

Jamal Murray’s ACL incident

On April 12th, 2021, Jamal Murray suffered a torn ACL while going up for a layup in the final minute of the game against the Golden State Warriors, according to Sportsnet. Murray underwent surgery to repair his torn ACL on April 21st, 2021. As reported by Sportsnet, Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles performed the surgery on Murray's torn ACL. Due to this surgery, Murray was out for the remaining 2021-22 season and also missed the entire 2022-23 season.

After one and a half years out, Jamal Murray eventually returned to the court on October 19th, 2022. It was Nugget’s season opener game against the Utah Jazz.

Even after a devastating ACL injury, Jamal Murray kept his focus in rehab and continued working hard. He eventually made a comeback and won the NBA championship in 2023. As reported by People Magazine, Jamal Murray thanks his head coach, Michael Malone, and his teammates for believing in him even after going down with an injury that most athletes do not come back from.

During a press conference during the 2023 NBA playoffs, coach Malone said, as per People magazine,

“His first thought was, ‘Man, are you guys going to trade me?’ Really. That was his [first thought], ‘I’m damaged goods, are you going to trade me now?’ And I hugged him and I said, ‘Hell no. You’re ours. We love you, we’re going to help you get back, and you’re going to be a better player for it.’”
