He attended Cumberland High School for three years and transferred to St. George's School in Middletown, Rhode Island, for his senior year. After high school, he joined the George Mason Patriots from 2020 to 2021, sidelining offers from Elon, Northeastern, Holy Cross, and Vermont.
At George Mason, Tyler Kolek was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, averaging 10.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. In 2021, he transferred to Marquette University and played for the Marquette Golden Eagles. Between 2023 and 2024, he made it twice to the First-team All-Big East, won the Big East Player of the Year in 2023, became the NCAA assists leader in 2024, and secured consensus second-team All-American honors the same season.
