Throughout his high school career, Ward helped his high school team to the 2019 co-district champions. He also earned first-team all-district as a quarterback, honorable mention all-state football, and All-Southern Brazoia County first-team quarterback.

Ward began his college career at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. He joined the Cardinals as a freshman in 2020 and made an immediate impact. In a season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, he threw for 2,260 yards and 24 touchdowns in just six games, leading the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in touchdown passes. His outstanding performance earned him the Jerry Rice Award as the most outstanding freshman in FCS football. On January 10, 2022, Ward transferred to Washington State University to compete at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. He quickly became the starting quarterback and had a successful first season in 2022, completing 64.4% of his passes for 3,231 yards with 23 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His ability to lead the Cougars offense earned him accolades and recognition within the Pac-12 Conference. In December 2023, after completing his eligibility at Washington State, Ward announced his transfer to the Miami Hurricanes. He chose Miami over entering the NFL Draft, citing a desire to enhance his skills and continue developing under head coach Mario Cristobal's program.
