The dual-threat quarterback started as a backup to Bryce Young in his first two seasons in Tuscaloosa. The 2023 was the first season in which Milroe got a chance to compete for the starting spot after the departure of Bryce Young to the NFL. He was named the starting quarterback after competing with Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner in the spring.

In his first season as a starter in 2023, Milroe played in 13 games for the Crimson Tide. He passed for 2834 yards and 23 passing touchdowns, while also adding another 12 on the ground, as per Sports Reference. His second year starting for Alabama produced numbers in the same ballpark as the 2023 season when it comes to passing yards and completion percentage. His interceptions doubled in the 2024 season compared to the previous season, registering 11 compared to six in 2023.
