IPL 2018: 5 alternate captaincy options for RCB

This season has been yet another sad story for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. From being labeled as the favorites to now languishing near the bottom of the table, nothing has gone right for the Virat Kohli-led side.

As has been the case in the IPL in the past, there might be an argument that a change in leadership might be needed for a change in fortunes.

We take a look at five possible captaincy candidates for RCB if the franchise looks aroud for possible options.

#5 Mandeep Singh

The young middle-order batsman has been in good form for his side and RCB can invest in him as a leader. He is quite vocal in the field and if reports from the Punjab Ranji side are to be believed, he is also a good observer of the game.

He also shares a good rapport with the other players and hence, will find it easier to step into the captaincy shoes if Kohli decides to let go of the post in the grander scheme of things.

#4 Parthiv Patel

The diminutive wicket-keeper batsman made a solid start to his IPL campaign this year with a half-century in the very first match. Perhaps the RCB management should let him spread his wings and give him the captaincy responsibility too.

Parthiv has been around Indian cricket for more than a decade now and understands the game. He also led Gujarat to the Ranji Trophy title and is a respected leader in the domestic circuit.

He is an IPL veteran and a good reader of the game, and can well be a good choice to lead RCB out of this rut.

#3 Tim Southee

He is the vice-captain of New Zealand and led his side in the T20I series against West Indies, winning both the games.

Southee is an experienced campaigner and understands the nuances of the game perfectly. He is never afraid of trying out new things on the field and this is what RCB ideally want as of now.

Being a bowler also helps, as this is one department RCB are severely lacking in this season.

#2 AB de Villiers

Another one of RCB's stalwarts, AB de Villiers has become synonymous with the RCB setup and can be the next person to take over the mantle of leading the side if his good friend Kohli decides to step down.

AB has led South Africa with aplomb in all the three formats and there is no reason why this cannot continue, with RCB. Also, added responsibility could well elevate his own batting form which would help him get back to winning matches for his side.

#1 Brendon McCullum

Many people associate the quiet resurgence of New Zealand cricket to the captaincy style of Brendon McCullum and the entertaining brand of cricket he endorsed.

He has captained the Kolkata Knight Riders before, and can be a good choice to lead RCB for the rest of the season and also the next so that he builds a team according to his own ethos.

McCullum also captains the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League and has tasted success there too. Perhaps this is what RCB need right now.
