What’s the story?

According to reports in Times of India, former Indian and Chennai Super Kings batsman Subramaniam Badrinath is all set to announce his retirement from all forms of the game.

The report also says that since he did not turn out for Hyderabad this season, he might end his cricketing career very soon. The announcement might come immediately after the IPL. Currently, he is a part of the commentary panel for the host broadcasters this season.

The details

Badrinath is a veteran in Indian cricket and although his international stint was not an extended one, bowlers in the domestic circuit swore by this diminutive batsman.

Despite not being an entirely flamboyant player, he adapted his game accordingly and became a mainstay for the Chennai Super Kings for the first five years of the IPL. He was snapped up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2015 but did not get a game for them.

In 145 first-class matches, Badrinath scored 10245 runs at an average of 54.49. In 144 List A matches, he scored 4164 runs at an average of 36.84.

In case you didn’t know…

Subramaniam Badrinath’s International debut came way back in 2008 in an ODI against Sri Lanka. He received his Test cap against South Africa in 2010 at Nagpur but played only one additional match after that game.

What’s next?

With unbridled experience and pedigree at his disposal, Badrinath might well foray into the field of coaching in India's domestic setup.

Also, he is an eloquent speaker and can continue with his commentary stint if he so pleases.

Author’s take

Badrinath's career was all about being a domestic stalwart but never being able to take the next step. Also, his peak coincided with a phase when India's middle order was populated with the likes of Sachin, Dravid, and VVS Laxman.

However, his career was, by all means, a glittering one and he can now walk away with his head held high.
