Zinedine Zidane denies knowing anything about "third party bonuses"

Zinedine Zidane at the press conference

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane gave his final press conference to the media ahead of the last La Liga match of the season against Deportivo La Coruna. Real Madrid trail Barcelona by a single point going into the game, with the Bernabeu club needing a win as well as hoping Granada do them a favor either by defeating the Catalans or earning a draw with them.

It has been a rollercoaster ride for Los Merengues as just a month back they were trailing Barcelona by 10 points but won the El Clasico 2-1 and ended Barca’s 39 match unbeaten streak to start a comeback in the title race.

Zidane believes his side will do their utmost to win the game on Saturday and hope for the best.

When asked if Granada will do everything possible to defeat Barcelona he said, “I'm not going to enter into that. All I can tell you is what we are going to do. Tomorrow's game for us is a final, and we have to put in the best game we can to take all three points. That the only thing on our minds. What matters is winning our game tomorrow. Everything else, as always, I'm not going to talk about.”

Zidane was very forthright and direct in his approach when asked about controversial questions such as his opinion on if third party bonuses should be legalised, “I don't know what you're talking about - honestly. I am only focused on what we are going to do tomorrow. I know that this is the last league press conference of the season and that there will be questions asked. All we are focused on is our football and what we want to do tomorrow.”

When asked if he has earned the right to remain and continue as Madrid coach he said, “I don't know what I have won. The important thing is the work we have been doing - above all, the players. There were a lot of doubts but I haven't won anything yet to make me think I'll continue.”

Zizou’s side have had a brilliant record against Deportivo in recent times having already defeated the club 5-0 in the reverse fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu, which was incidentally Zidane’s first game in charge for the historic club. They also routed Depor 8-2 last season at the Riazor which is sure to give them a lot of confidence heading into this game.

But the 43-year-old remained cautious saying they have to enter strongly as it’ll be difficult away from home.

“Depor are a good side, they know how to play football and in front of their fans, they'll be keen to finish the season well. As always, we'll be going into the game knowing that it will be difficult, but we are focused on the job we need to do. If we are focused from the first minute to the last, we'll fight to win the game,” he said.

Madrid finally look like they have put their injury troubles to bed as they travel with the full squad to Deportivo. When questioned about his team’s fitness Zidane looked content. He said, “Every day you are thinking on improving, physically, the team's fine. Our injury problems are behind us.”

The title race has gone down to the wire and it is sure to be an enthralling final day in Spain. Let the best team win.
