Dont’e Thornton Jr. began his collegiate football career at the University of Oregon, where he played two seasons (2021–2022). He recorded 26 catches for 541 yards and three touchdowns in 25 games, averaging 20.8 yards per catch. Thornton also recorded two rushes for six yards. Thornton transferred to the University of Tennessee in 2023. A season-ending injury shortened his junior year, but he still had 13 receptions for 224 yards and one touchdown in nine games. In his senior season (2024), He led the nation with an average of 25.4 yards per reception, totaling 26 catches for 661 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games.
