In his sophomore season, McKinstry finished the year with 35 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, and a single interception. In his final season with the Crimson Tide, McKinstry would go on to have 32 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, in 14 games that he played.
His individual performance on the defensive side of the field got him named to First-team All-American in 2023, and McKinstry was also selected to the First Team All-SEC twice in 2022 and 2023. There was a ton of hype when McKinstry was coming out of high school and rightfully so. He was a consensus five-star recruit and was also named the USA Today Defensive Player of the Year.
