Lane Johnson Position
Lane Johnson plays as an offensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles franchise. He primarily plays on the right side and is, therefore, the right offensive tackle on the team. However, if need be, he can switch over to the left side as well as he has shown on multiple instances throughout his decade-long career.
What makes the Eagles’ tackle so special is that despite his big size, he can move around easily and has great agility and athleticism. It is quite a unique skill set to see offensive linemen who are big and strong have the quickness to athletic ability to back up their strength.
As of 2024, Johnson has been considered one of the top right tackles in the league for many years. The Texas native started his rookie season being thrust into the offensive line following a season-ending injury to the Eagles starting right tackle in 2013. While he wasn’t anywhere near the top of the league in his rookie season, he was learning at a quick pace.
By the end of his second season in the NFL, Johnson had gone from the 26th-best right tackle in 2013 to being rated as the 2nd-best right tackle in the league. In the 14 games that he started, he allowed only 1 sack.
By 2017, Johnson had become a steady and consistent performer on the Eagles’ offensive line and he was a major factor in the team winning their first-ever Super Bowl with a win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII. That year, Johnson was also named to his first Pro Bowl.
Since that Super Bowl win, Lane Johnson has continued to excel and has become an integral member of the Eagles' dominant front line. Alongside players such as center - Jason Kelce, left tackle - Jordan Mailata, and left guard - Landon Dickerson, the Eagles’ front line has risen to the top of the table in the NFL since 2022.
Lane Johnson Previous Positions
It is quite interesting to note that the Eagles’ tackle has not been playing this position from the moment he started playing football. Generally, most players, especially when they get to college have one or a maximum of two positions that they specialize in.
In the case of Johnson, he started out his high school football playing the position of quarterback. When he reached college, he was playing both the quarterback and tight end positions in his freshman year for the Kilgore Rangers football team.
After his freshman year, Johnson transferred to the University of Oklahoma and played four years on the Oklahoma Sooners football team. Since playing quarterback was a limited opportunity, he continued to play tight end in his sophomore year.
Further, in his junior year, Johnson moved over to the defensive end position. However, since the offensive line of the team suffered several injuries, the coach switched him over to the offensive tackle position in his junior season and since then he has never looked back.
