In 2018, Hochuli was promoted from back judge to referee. This happened after Ed Hochuli, one the greatest referees and also Shawn Hochuli's dad retired. This decision was widely criticized all around the league because at that time Shawn was pretty young and didn't have much experience, this decision was labeled as a direct example of nepotism. However, Hochuli continued his career as a referee and, he was the first referee to give Tom Brady his first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the 2022 NFL playoff game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Rams.
