“Always happy to talk to Hal” - Scott Boras responds after Hal Steinbrenner welcomes Juan Soto in-season extension talks

Scott Boras hints at Soto's contract extension

Juan Soto impressed everyone with his performance this season. For this, Hal Steinbrenner, the Yankees owner, wants him to be with the team for a longer time.

“Well, I think we’d like to see him here for the rest of his career. I don’t think there’s any doubt of that," said Steinbrenner.

But there is a problem that exists. Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, is not a fan of mid-season deals and contract extensions. This is a tactic that he uses to increase the value of the players. However, Boras had commented on Steinbrenner’s wish.

“Always happy to talk to Hal.” said Scott Boras (as per NY Post)

Boras is a master negotiator and his comments are often carefully crafted. Boras is not guaranteeing anything but he’s simply leaving the door open for communication. This keeps the pressure on the team and lets them know Soto is a valuable asset they might want to lock down for the future.

It is now up to the Yankees to see what kind of deal they can offer to retain Soto. Boras has his own game for managing his clients. The reason he isn't keen on contract extensions is to explore the market value of a player.

Soto has done the same thing in the past. He rejected a $440 million, 15-year contract extension deal from the Washington Nationals in 2022. He ended up being traded to the San Diego Padres in 2023 for $23 million and eventually ending up with the Yankees for $31 million.

If the trade amount is analyzed, he ended up making more money than he would have with the Nationals in 15 years. So if the Yankees can offer an adequate amount, he could stay with them.

Juan Soto has hit nine home runs this season, has a batting average of .302 and an OPS of.920 and also has 34 RBIs. Only time will tell what the future holds for Juan Soto. Boras' comments have certainly stirred the pot, and all eyes will be on how the team responds.

Juan Soto has also hinted at a contract extension

The three-time All-Star outfielder has hinted at the possibility of a contract extension with the Yankees. While he is focused on winning games in 2024, Soto has left the door open for contract extension talks.

“My doors has been always open. Whenever he wants to start talking with Scott and all his people, the door is open. They were open to hear whatever he has. And for me, I just focus on the game right now,” Soto said.

The Yankees currently sit at the top of the AL East table. Having Soto in the team for a longer time would help them carry on their legacy.
