Krishna Poonia seizes silver in USA Olympic Training Centre meet

Krishna Poonia, the top Indian Discus Thrower grabbed the silver in the USA Olympic Training Centre meet atChula Vista, San Diego, on Thursday. She also recorded her new personal best of 63. 69 m in discus throw. Poonia’s previous best was 63.41 m which she made at Salinas, California on May,2008. However she was not able to break the Seema Antil‘s national record of 64.64m.

Poonia who is being trained by former Olympic Champion Mac Wilkins at Portland in the USA since the last two months lagged behind Becky Breisch of America who captured gold by throwing her discus to a distance of 63.89 m. Navdeep Dhaliwal of Britain came third with 47.16 m. In the men’s event, it was Olympic Champion Gerd Kanter of Estonia who seized the title making a world leading record throwing his discus to 71.45m.

Poonia who won a bronze in the last year’s Asian championships in Guangzhou, China have earlier made 58.99m in her first outing this year at the Mt. SAC Relays meet at Walnut on April 17. She had captured bronze in that tournament.

Poonia is now looking forward to Commonwealth Games going to be held in Delhi in October this year where she will have to compete against World Champion Dani Samuels of Australia.
