Polish Olympian Malachowski successfully sells his Rio Olympics medal to save child battling cancer

Rio Olympic Games did not just give athletes from all around the world a chance to showcase their talents at the biggest stage, but it has also ended up helping a three-year old Polish boy who was struck with cancer.

Poland’s Piotr Malachowski had won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics in the discus throwing event. The Polish athlete had got to know about the condition of a three-year old child who had been struck with cancer and needed money for his treatment. Therefore, the athlete decided to auction his Olympic medal in order to help a boy called Olek who needed money for treatment in New York.

The 33-year old athlete world champion had written on his Facebook page that he had auctioned off his medal earlier this week to fund the treatment of the 3-year old boy who had been battling eye cancer for two years and needed money for treatment in New York which was the only hope for the boy.

The Polish athlete had first posted this message on his Facebook page

The Polish wrote, “I fought for gold in Rio. Today I'm calling on everyone to fight for something even more precious.”

He added, “If you help me, my silver medal may turn out to be more precious than gold for Olek.”

The athlete had added that he would use the entire amount raised for the auction in the treatment of the little child.

Piotr later posted this message on his page where he thanked everyone for taking part

The Olympian received some great news on his auction as he found the right takers for his medal on Ebay. He wrote, “Dominic and Sebastian Kulczyk won the bid for the silver medal and have completed the collection of the medal.”

He also thanked everyone for participating in the bid, “Thank you everyone who took part in the auction on Ebay and everyone who in any way joined the auction.”

The success to the Olympian means that the athlete will now be able to get the right treatment for little child, Olek and will be hoping that the child is able to beat eye cancer.
