New York Yankees fans enraged as outfielder Aaron Hicks muffs catch after calling off shortstop Anthony Volpe: "How is this guy still on the team"

New York Yankees fans are at their wit's end about Aaron Hicks – and the regular season is still two weeks away.

Just hours after the Yankees sent left field prospect Jasson Dominguez down to the minor leagues, clinching Hicks' spot in the opening day lineup, the reviled outfielder called New York's favorite prospect – shortstop Anthony Volpe – off of a pop-up, only to muff the catch.

Entering his eighth season with the New York Yankees, Aaron Hicks is Public Enemy No. 1 among the team's fanbase. Yankee Nation has long past grown weary and frustrated at the underperforming efforts of the 33-year-old light-hitting, error-prone outfielder, but with Dominguez's demotion, they are likely stuck with Hicks for yet another campaign.

While Dominguez was not deemed ready for the major leagues, according to Yankees management, New Yorkers are beside themselves as to why the team continues to stick with Hicks several years after he was traded to Gotham City by the Minnesota Twins.

Yankees fans have a triumvirate of hatred these days, with Hicks, Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa – all three players happen to be players that New York received from the Twins – all proving to be a constant bee in fan's bonnets. If there's one man that Yankees fans want to see gone more than any of the previous trio, it's the man that brought them all to New York: general manager Brian Cashman.

With word that the Green Bay Packers are playing hardball over the negotiations in the proposed deal to send quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, one New York Yankees fan had a creative idea regarding shipping Aaron Hicks out of town.

Just as long as the Packers wouldn't count on Hicks to field kickoffs or punts ... or play wide receiver ... or tight end. Does Green Bay need a waterboy?

It feels like an eternity ago, but Aaron Hicks once made New York Yankees fans stand up and cheer. In 2017, Hicks – a career .231 hitter – logged a batting average of .266 with 15 home runs. The next season, he slammed a career-high 27 home runs with a .248 average.

In the last two seasons, Hicks hit .194 and .216 with 12 combined home runs.
