AB de Villiers fined for slow over rate against India

One more over rate offence and De Villiers will face a match suspension

The Proteas captain AB de Villiers has been fined 40% of his match fee & the rest of the team 20% for maintaining a slow over-rate against India during the first one-day international at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, reports ESPNcricinfo.

The two on-field umpires Vineet Kulkarni and Aleem Dar, the television umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin and the reserve umpire Anil Dandekar together decided the fine charges which was later imposed by the match referee Chris Broad. Broad pronounced authoritatively that South Africa were two overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

According to the same news site, De Villiers pleaded accepted the proposed match fees after pleading guilty to the offence. De Villiers was recently found guilty for which he served a one-match suspension during the Bangladesh tour in July.

The limited-over skipper might get suspended again for a match if his team under his leadership failed to keep the over-rate in control within next 12 months.

De Villiers helped South Africa defeated India in the first ODI of the five-match series by five runs. He scored a brilliant 73-ball 104 to take his team’s total to 303 runs which was eventually defended successfully by the Proteas bowlers in a last over thriller contest.

The South African team will play their next match on October 14 in Indore city. They are leading the ODI series by 1-0 with four more matches to go. Prior to this, they defeated India in the three-match Twenty20 international series by 2-0.
