Bangladesh vs New Zealand: 2nd Test - Day 2: Shakib keeps Bangladesh in the game as rain plays spoilsport

Bangladesh bowler Shakib Al Hasan (C) celebrates with teammates the dismissal of New Zealand batsman Peter Fulton (L) during the second day of the second cricket Test match between Bangladesh and New Zealand at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on October 22, 2013.

Resuming the day on 228/5, Bangladesh were all out for 282 as Neil Wagner and Ish Sodhi ran through the lower order in no time. In reply, New Zealand lost three important wickets for 107 runs, all to Shakib-Al-Hasan, before rain intervened to halt the proceedings for the second consecutive day of the Test match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.

Earlier in the day, the home team’s hopes hinged on their captain Mushfiqur Rahim and star batsman Nasir Hossain but their failed outing with the bat led to the downfall of their team. Wagner’s impressive performance with the ball continued as he picked up all his three victims of the day with deliveries angled across the batsmen, who edged them to the fielders at catching positions behind the wicket.

Ish Sodhi accounted for the most priced wicket of the home team – Hossain (19) – with a delivery that pitched outside leg and turned enough to take the edge. The 20-year-old left arm spinner had three wickets to his name while Wagner ended up with a five-wicket haul.

The Kiwis’ struggle against spin seemed to be never ending, when they resumed their innings, as three of their top five batsmen failed to convert their starts to leave their team in a spot of bother. While Hamish Rutherford (13) guided a delivery that turned in to the fielder at short-leg, Peter Fulton (14) was trapped in front. Shakib picked up his third-wicket when Brendon McCullum (11) holed out, while attempting to heave a long-hop, to a brilliant catch at the deep.

Kane Williamson (28) and Ross Taylor (37) saw off the day for the Kiwis without any further damage. The match looks to be coasting towards a draw with more than 70 overs already wasted as a result of the persisting rain.
