Reports: New ideas to control corruption in cricket likely

Justice Mukul Mudgal

As per Mail Today, a source close to the Mudgal investigation committee thinks that cricket players and administrators are now aware that they will be answerable to the law and fans. The source said that it was the one good thing to come out of the IPL spot-fixing probe.

New ideas to control corruption in cricket

"The Supreme Court did a very good thing by instituting this inquiry. Whatever be the result of the probe, players and [cricket] officials are now very scared of even thinking something else [than the game]," the source that has followed the investigation closely was quoted as saying to Mail Today.

"And this time, during IPL-7, there were disclosures by players themselves about the approaches made. So, the probe has made an impact, irrespective of what has happened in the past. They have understood very well that doing something else [fixing] and taking some money would not work now. They are answerable to law and people."

The report further claims the source as saying that a new system will be in place to tackle the same once the Supreme Court delivers its final verdict on the issue.

"The Mudgal panel has given its suggestions [in the first report] and the court will, I think, will accept them and, maybe, direct them to follow certain recommendations that have been made," he said. "The court could also come up with its own ideas on how to control this menace. So, there will be a system in place in the coming days."

Corruption in cricket is like Ebola virus

The source further added that there will be three important after-effects following the committee’s report.

"First, players and organisers/administrators are now feeling that they are accountable," he said.

"Second, if the panel's suggestions are implemented to correct the system, lots of changes will take place and that may change the public perception [towards cricket]. But there is always the fear that if you are roaming in an area where there's a huge Ebola virus going on, you'll get Ebola, even if you are a very good man."

"The third one is: How to cure the Ebola? There's an Ebola virus of underground muscle in this context. That has to be taken care of," he concluded.
