Warner dropped for New Zealand match over alcohol-related incident

Australian opener David Warner, 26, has landed himself in trouble again and faces the possibility of a sanction for an alleged incident related to alcohol, during the on-going Champions Trophy campaign in Birmingham.

A Cricket Australia (CA) spokesman confirmed: “We are aware that an alleged incident has taken place and we’re trying to get more information from team management in England.”

Details remain unclear but team officials discussed at length of the punishment for the left-hander on Wednesday morning, in consultation with Cricket Australia management in Melbourne.

CA confirmed through their official Twitter account saying:

Reports on Tuesday evening suggested that an Australian player had been involved in a discipline breach after the team’s opening game loss to England. New Zealand players were told that an Australian player had been sent home on the eve of their second Group A match at Edgbaston on Wednesday. Warner, though, is still in the UK.

The man from New South Wales is no stranger to controversy as he was reprimanded last month for a rant on Twitter. He was fined $5750 for a tirade defending his performances during the recently-concluded Indian Premier League against the two senior cricket journalists from Australia.

Warner has struggled for form in recent months. He had a poor showing in the Test tour of India as well and managed to score only nine runs in Australia’s opening game versus England.
