5 incredible MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction Limited combos

MTG limited combos Outlaws of Thunder Junction
Here are some amazing combos you could pull off in the Limited format of MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction

The Limited format of MTG’s Outlaws of Thunder Junction is absolutely bananas when it comes to combo potential. There are so many extra cards out there, thanks to The Big Score cards, Special Guests, and Breaking News cards. There are some truly devastating, hilarious, and otherwise impossible combos that players can pull off. Of course, this is provided you have access to the cards in the Limited format, naturally. I imagine you could do these in casual play as well, and Commander, depending on what your table allows.

The Limited format requires players to open certain MTG product and use only those cards — in this case, it’s Outlaws of Thunder Junction. This is not a constructed format, so you have to get lucky and use what you have.

Some of these combos also came from me assessing a set of cards that Wizards of the Coast sent me to celebrate its launch. Here are a few favorites from our imagination, and around the internet.

Amazing combos to use in MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction Limited format

1) Archive Trap + Slickshot Lockpicker

Having access to Archive Trap in MTG’s Outlaws of Thunder Junction makes for some hilarious Limited combos - like this one. Sure, it’s a five-drop, and your opponent mills thirteen cards. It’s a high cost and doesn’t seem like it does too much from the outset. However, you plot down the Slickshot Lockpicker as early as possible (probably turn three).

Then, when you can cast Archive Trap, do so. Mill your opponent, and do anything else you care to on that turn. It’s likely not much since that card is expensive — unless, your opponent searched their library. Then, on the next turn, activate Slickshot Lockpicker, use its ability, and cast Archive Trap with Flashback.

That’s an extra thirteen, for a total of twenty-six. Since most Limited decks are forty cards, with how deep you are in the game by now, it’s practically over. Relax, play cool, and let your foe deck themselves out for this MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction Limited combo to bear fruit.

2) Rakdos, the Muscle + Forsaken Miner

Rakdos, the Muscle is one of the best Commanders in this set, not to mention cards. This combo takes advantage of his sacrifice mechanic, for a nearly unstoppable combo in MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction. If you sacrifice a creature to Rakdos, he becomes Indestructible until the end of the turn and tapped. However, you can do this after declaring an attack.

Once you’ve sacrificed the Forsaken Miner, use Rakdos’ primary ability to exile a card from your opponent’s deck, which also counts as committing a crime. Pay the 1 black mana and Forsaken Miner returns! You can keep doing this as many turns as you’d like to exile your opponent’s deck slowly but surely, or to make sure you always have a nearly unstoppable force of aggression.

3) Spinewoods Armadillo + Reanimate

Reanimate is one of my favorite cards in the Breaking News list in MTG, so I’m glad there’s a card that enables it to be used in a spectacular way for this Outlaws of Thunder Junction Limited combo. Do you want a 7/7 on the third turn? It’s so easy to do. On the second turn, use Spinewoods Armadillo’s ability to discard itself from your hand to get a basic land or Desert. You also gain 3 life, which is nice.

Then, cast Reanimate next turn. That’s all it takes for this MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction combo to kick off! Now you have a 7/7 with Reach in play. Sure, you lose six life for this, but you gained three beforehand. Now, just start swinging until you win.

4) High Noon + Ertha Jo, Frontier Mentor

When I saw High Noon, I expected it to be connected to a variety of control combos — ways to lock the board down forever. However, the real value in this card for an outstanding MTG Outlaws of Thunder Junction Limited combo is in that second effect: Sacrifice it to deal five damage to any target.

Pair that with Ertha Jo, Frontier Mentor, which copies any activated ability that targets a creature or player— as long as you did it. So activate High Noon, and deal 10 damage instead of five, for just five mana! What a bargain!

5) Vadmir, New Blood + Ornery Tumblewagg

So, this MTG Limited combo for Outlaws of Thunder Junction is one that kicked the absolute stuffing out of me during the preview event. A player managed to draft this somehow, and it blew me away. Vadmir, New Blood gains a +1/+1 counter each turn when you commit a crime. If he has four or more counters, he gains menace and lifelink. That’s slow, right?

Ornery Tumblewagg doesn’t care about that one bit. During your combat phase, he gives a creature a +1/+1 counter. Then, whenever he attacks while saddled, you double up that number on a creature. In a few turns, he’s an unstoppable killing machine. The very next turn he could easily have the necessary four counters.

There are so many other combos we could’ve talked about, too. I’m such a huge fan of the OTJ Limited format, thanks to all these ridiculous cards. Outlaws of Thunder Junction is the latest set of MTG cards available, in both physical and digital formats.
