Formula One president Bernie Ecclestone has claimed that Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso gave up over the 2013 campaign and added that the Spaniard was looking to leave the team.

“I’ve been a little disappointed in Fernando, because I’m a big supporter of him and Ferrari. I thought he gave up a little bit, which is proof he was looking for another team,” Ecclestone said.

Alonso was warned about his conduct by Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo during the season and the driver even emerged as a candidate for the second 2014 Red Bull seat at one point. Though he only came second to Sebastian Vettel in the standings, Alonso dropped a whopping 116 points in his last nine races.

Ecclestone also criticized the team for not providing Alonso with a championship winning car.

“I don’t know whether the team is not competitive because of him or because the people running the team aren’t getting the job done. He certainly deserves a car that’s capable of winning races. Whether that Ferrari is or not, I don’t know,” he said.
