F1 Young Driver Tests - Silverstone: Day Two

Pastor Maldonado of Williams and Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber have said that they are happy with the new tyres from Italian manufacturer Pirelli. Both Maldonado and Hulkenberg ran tests for almost half a day in the Young Driver Test in Silverstone on Thursday.

The FIA has allowed race drivers to take part in this year’s Young Driver Test after several teams raised concerns regarding the reliability of this season’s Pirelli tyres.

“I think there is an improvement in terms of reliability and performance as well. Maybe the tyres are not quite that what we had in the past, but they are very consistent, which is quite good,” Maldonado told reporters.

Pirelli has maintained last year’s tyre structures while introducing new aggressive compounds in the new tyres. The steel plates were replaced with Kevlar belts for the German Grand Prix after a series of blow outs in Silverstone. German driver Nico

Hulkenberg , however said it’s difficult to come to a definite conclusion as too many factors have to be considered.

“A lot of factors are different here. The conditions are quite a lot hotter to the race weekend, the tyres are different, we had an update on the car. So many things and it’s difficult to filter everything out. But the car still feels the same pretty much,” said the former Force India driver.
