Andrea Pirlo, the Italian playmaker has announced his retirement from International football after the World Cup but would continue playing for Juventus in the Serie A.

The 35-year old has had a stellar career with Italy earning 109 caps since making his debut in 2002 against Azerbaijan, helping Italy to crowning glory in 2006 World Cup in Germany and reach the finals of the Euro championship 2012 before losing to Spain in Kiev.

The deep-lying midfielder made a name for himself with his brilliant execution of the Panenka kick, had recently signed a two-year extension to his Juventus contract.

Speaking to the press before the World Cup opener against England he said “ I’m not getting any younger and you have to allow younger players to come through. It would be useless to keep on going.”

The midfield maestro started off his career as an attacking forward leading the Italian Under-21 side to Euro championship success in 2000 but he found his true bearings in a deep-lying role carved out by Carlo Ancellotti while at AC Milan.

Pirlo added “I would always be available, but it could be problematic I’d be annoyed if I wasn’t selected, so its best to stay home!”
