What’s the story?

Barcelona are interested in signing 27-year-old Borussia Dortmund star and German international Marco Reus in the summer transfer window. The supremely talented Reus has endured an injury-hit 12 months, but that has not deterred top clubs across Europe who are more than willing to take a gamble on the Borussia Dortmund winger. According to reports from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have joined the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United in the race to sign the German international.

The Catalan giants are on the lookout for quality players who can really improve their squad and the club’s hierarchy feels that Marco Reus will bring freshness, incisiveness and depth to the already impressive Blaugrana attack.

The 27-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Premier League with reports yesterday suggesting that Manchester United were one among the clubs interested in securing his signature. However, Dortmund will not let go of their star man easily.

While the German international had a release clause of £21 million in 2015, Dortmund removed the clause when he signed a new contract. However, any move for the versatile winger is expected to cost around £67 million.

The heart of the matter

It promises to be a summer of huge change at Camp Nou. With Luis Enrique expected to step down at the end of the season, a lot of the new arrivals and departures from the Catalan club will depend on the new manager and the style of football he wants to play at Barcelona.

Also, Lionel Messi’s contract situation is another thing which the Barcelona board will want to resolve quickly and it will be interesting to see how their squad shapes up after the summer transfer window.

What’s next?

Marco Reus might have missed out on a lot of games this season, but in his few appearances so far, he has shown why he is so highly regarded all over the world. The 27-year-old has long been tipped for greatness and with reports from Germany stating that he is ready to leave, clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and now even Barcelona will be following his situation closely.

Author’s take

Marco Reus will definitely improve the Barcelona squad in terms of quality, but there are huge question marks over his fitness. Also for an exorbitant fee of £67 million, Barcelona would be better off looking at other alternatives like Liverpool’s Coutinho and Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen.
