There is nothing more electric than the atmosphere before a big European tie at Stamford Bridge, Barcelona and Napoli in 2012 will live long in the memory.

After six months in the Europa League we are back where we belong this September in the Champions League.

We may have gone on to win the trophy in Amsterdam in what was a great trip but Thursday night football is not for me. The fixture list becomes cluttered and you have to play on a Sunday after travelling all over Europe isn’t what we need if we have to concentrate on the league as well.

Ironically we face our semi-final opponents in the Europa League Basel, in our first group game and in an environment of football and financial saturation; it is a positive that the game against the team from Switzerland has sold out, even if it did go on general sale.

This is a trophy that Jose Mourinho has won in Italy and Portugal but he will feel he always has unfinished business with the competition until he has won it with Chelsea.

One step at a time and the group stages to negotiate, but it’s great to be back!
