Chelsea fans need to have trust in Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres has started to get positive coverage in the press and the media after his latest performance for Chelsea and I would like to know what YOUR opinion is of him and if it’s changed? It seems to me that it’s as simple as trusting in the player and the man that has made the difference.

I have always been a massive fan of Torres even before he came to club. I have watched his trials and tribulations at this club ever since he signed and have praying for his luck to change because if anyone deserves it, Torres does!

His goalscoring record will always remain under scrutiny because of the burden of his £50m transfer fee. He has spoken about it himself here too and doesn’t shy away from the facts either.

One thing you can NEVER criticise him for is his work rate! Throughout the difficult period in the early days here, Torres would never stop working on the pitch, his movement is different class and if anything as Mourinho and Rafa said, we had to adapt the team to the way he likes to play.

For years we were used to playing the ball up to Drogba for him to either hold the ball up, win the header or bring other people into play and that has never been Torres’ style. As we know, Torres likes to play off the shoulder of the last defender and look for those balls in the channels or in behind.

Finally is seems that Torres’ luck is beginning to change. His performances are consistent in addition to his fantastic work rate and we are also now seeing much more of an end product again. There has been talk of the Mourinho effect with Torres and the respect between the two of them is obvious, Torres has been quick to point out that you still need to work hard. He said:

He talks with me like he talks with everyone else. I know he likes people who work and it’s all about work. When you’re working hard, everything comes. It sometimes takes lots of time but at the end it will come. I was happy with this game and hopefully it’s the start of many games in a row scoring goals.’

Jose Mourinho is fantastic with his players as we all know. The ones that buy into his methods and into his philosophy will reap the rewards and more often than not, that leads to trophies.

Looking from the outside in at Torres, you could tell that under AVB and to a point under Roberto Di Matteo, Torres was always second fiddle to Drogba and let’s be honest that was never in question. For Torres however, that was massive.

He wants a manager that believes in him and trusts him and I cannot under estimate just how much that means to him. He had that for the most part when Rafa Benitez came in and worked hard with him to try and get him fitter, quicker and sharper and Torres finished the season with 22 goals.

This season however looks to be a different story. Jose Mourinho is already working his magic and Torres has bought into his methods 100% and we are seeing the rewards of late.We have seen and heard many a Chelsea manager talk of Torres in press conferences, post match interviews and in general but no one would have had an effect on Torres as much as Jose Mourinho would have done speaking on Tuesday after Chelsea beat Schalke 3-0 with two goals from Torres.

When asked about him, Jose responded and said this about Torres:

“What boosts him is the confidence he knows I have in him. I felt Fernando was adapted to this game, but maybe if he’d played and the team didn’t get the result people would have asked why I changed it, but I put faith in him and he answered well.”

That quote from Jose cannot be underestimated. For the first time and in public, Fernando Torres has his manager at Chelsea state on record that he trusts him and has confidence in him and for the player that is huge!

These days in modern football, it’s just as important to be a fantastic man manager as it is to be tactically aware and Jose Mourinho is one of the best around if not THE best!

We have all seen the start Torres has made to the season, finally with the 100% backing of his manager, imagine what Fernando Torres can achieve this season and beyond at Chelsea!
