City mistake hands Chelsea three points

Fernando Torres: The star of the evening for Chelsea

The game at the bridge which saw Chelsea take on Man City was full of action and ended with a very strange goal. Before the match, many would have settled for a draw so at 1-1 with a couple of minutes remaining everything looked good. Then all of a sudden a mistake between goalkeeper and defender gifted Torres an opportunity to steal all three points from City and he did.

Anyway lets look back at the first half before all the drama kicked off in the last few minutes. Gary Cahill had Chelsea’s first chance, volleying over the bar when he was in plenty of space. Torres topped that miss with a chance of his own when Ramires played him in and he blazed it over the bar.

After the game, Torres said that he assumed he was offside and wasn’t trying particularly hard. However what was to follow after was one of the best Torres performances we have seen from the Spaniard in a Chelsea shirt.

He kept his head up high and setup the opening goal just minutes later when he found Schurrle. He took on Gael Clichy and left him for dead before squaring for Schurrle who finished from four yards. Torres continued his good work when minutes after the Schurrle goal his shot smashes against the post. He turned a situation which wasn’t leading to anything into almost a goal.

The Torres show took a bit of a break in the second half and Aguero gave Chelsea a reminder of what they are capable of when he equalised. He fired in a shot after losing Cahill and stunned Cech who was beaten at his near post and probably should have done better. After that it looked like City might go on and get a second goal to take the lead.

However what followed in the closing minute of the game was one of the strangest goals I have seen in a while. The winner came from nothing after Willian played a long ball forward for Torres to chase. At this point there was no danger but Joe Hart came charging off his line before Nastasic managed to head it back over Hart. Torres saw the opportunity and ran onto the ball and slotted home the winner.

The Blues are within touching distance of Arsenal in first place, and are now four points clear of City. This was the first really big test of the year, and although we struggled at times in the second half we continued to fight and come away with all three points. I will leave you with a Torres song after his man of the match performance!
