Fernando Torres becomes a key Barcelona transfer target

The £50 million experiment of Fernando Torres has been limited success for Chelsea, and it seems that the club is willing to cut their losses by selling the player in the summer.

According to Sky Sports’ Graham Hunter, Barcelona are ready to come in with a bid for the Spaniard. Any move should not be surprising given the comments made by new manager José Mourinho after ascending the throne for the second time.

Mourinho rated the performances of Torres as ‘so-so’ and it immediately cast a huge doubt on his future. Chelsea have also been constantly linked with Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, who appears closer to a move to Chelsea than Manchester City and Real Madrid.

The Camp Nou has always been a special place for Torres and Barca feel that he will feel at home right here. Barcelona’s bid is likely to start just below £20 million, and it will be interesting to see if Chelsea entertain a loss of more than £30 million. Torres is not really a target striker, and Mourinho usually refers to work with a target striker upfront.

At 29 years of age, he does not have a long time to prove himself. Chelsea may be prepared to sell him now since his transfer value will plummet even further once he crosses 30. Of course, Barcelona recently bought Neymar for close to £50 million, but the team still lacks a target striker. Torres could still be a Chelsea player at the start of the new season, but we would have a much better opportunity of winning the league with a striker who can get 20 league goals.

Maybe the Torres of Liverpool would have scored it easily, but I just do not see him doing the same now.
