Madrid, Oct 19 – Spanish Guardia Civil traffic police have confirmed that they caught former Germany captain and Chelsea star Michael Ballack speeding on a highway in Spain.

Ballack, who also played for Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and made 98 appearances for his country, was stopped on the A-5 motorway close to the historic town of Trujillo, reports Xinhua.

A court official in Trujillo said Ballack, 36, went before a local judge Thursday morning and challenged the charges, meaning he will be summoned to appear before a judge in a Caceres criminal court at a later date.

Ballack, who announced his retirement Oct 2, led German squad to the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup, and won the English and German league titles with Chelsea and Bayern Munich respectively.
