Four signings that will win Chelsea the Premier League

Atletico Madrid's Brazilian defender Fil

Chelsea Football Club finished third in last season’s Premier League, but many of us, myself included, can’t see them going any way but up. After the return of the Special One, Chelsea immediately look a stronger force. I really respect Rafa Benitez’s work last season, but having José in charge should deliver not just one of the best tactical minds alive, but also something the West London club have lacked since his departure some six years ago: stability.

With enough money to rival anyone, Chelsea have no excuse but to aim big next season. There are few positions that really seem weak in this particular London outfit, but strengthening across their team is still required. So, without further ado, here’s four signings to help Chelsea secure the Premier League title.

Filipe Luis – Atletico Madrid

Age: 27

Position: Left Back

Value: £17 million

Transfer Info: Although Chelsea own Ashley Cole, who was probably still in the top five left backs in the world last year, they cannot rely on his performances for much longer. By the end of next season he will have turned 33, and his pace and defensive awareness will begin to drop rapidly. Felipe Luis has proven himself at Atlético Madrid to be an incredible talent, and if Chelsea are wise, they will sign him before Cole’s fitness deteriorates.

Daniele De Rossi – Roma

Age: 29

Position: Defensive Midfielder

Value: £14 million

Transfer Info: Despite the ridiculous influx of attacking midfielders to Stamford Bridge this season, the London club are actually still lacking in the defensive midfielder department. It will be interesting to see if Essien holds a future with the club, but with the loan of Romeu to Valencia, Chelsea look like they are currently relying on a distinctly average player in John Obi Mikel to support the defence. It’s been a long time since there has been a summer without De Rossi being linked to a Premier League club, and this summer could finally be his time. Roma would hate to part with the Italy international, but Chelsea’s force will be formidable should they sign him.

Wayne Rooney – Man United

Manchester United v Chelsea - Premier League

Age: 27

Position: Central Forward

Value: £26 million

Transfer Info: The Rooney saga just goes on and on. Moyes remains adamant that the England forward will remain a Manchester United player, but reports continue about his future, culminating the Chelsea bid for him which was swiftly rejected. If he leaves Old Trafford, it has to be to move to London, with both Arsenal and Chelsea ready to greet the forward with open arms. His technical ability is clear to see, and either of the two prestigious managers in London may well get Rooney working back at his best. Chelsea could just win the battle over this one however, as they hold greater financial power to pay Rooney’s infamous wages.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – PSG

Age: 31

Position: Striker

Value: £24 million

Transfer Info: Former Chelsea target Edinson Cavani has joined PSG. Without doubt, this has to worry the side’s current forward, Ibrahimovic. Despite his age, it appears he is open to a move to the Premiership to ensure playing time, and perhaps more importantly, his status as the club’s main man. Although Chelsea have Demba Ba and Fernando Torres (who had an impressive return of 9 goals in 16 games in Europe last season), they could do with a star man that could guarantee goals for the next couple of years. The ability of Ibrahimovic is unquestionable, and if there’s one man that could ensure his performances are at their best, it’s Mourinho.

So, that’s the four players that we think could send Chelsea to the top of the league. What are your thoughts? Is Mourinho the man to return Chelsea to the top of the league? Or could this second Mourinho era be a huge anti-climax? Please share your thoughts and opinions below.
