Chelsea captain John Terry is expected to sign a one year contract extension and stay at Stamford Bridge next season, reports The Evening Standard.

The 33 year-old, who has been linked with an England recall following a resurgence under Jose Mourinho and a string of impressive performances in the heart of The Blues’ defence.

Chelsea have the division’s best defensive record and have conceded just 20 goals, which is testament to Terry and centre back partner Gary Cahill’s influence.

Terry’s current deal expires in the summer, and it is believed he asked for a two year deal that would have broken the club’s preference of offering one year contracts to players over the age of 30.

With the club reportedly declaring that they are unwilling to make any exceptions, Terry and his representatives have stood down and the defender is now prepared to accept the new terms and remain with the club.

The former Three Lions skipper has been linked with a financially lucrative move to Turkish outfit Galatasaray, but has always been adamant that he would prefer to stay with Chelsea, whom he joined at 14 years of age.

Mourinho will have a major say in Terry’s future, but having praised his captain as one of the best defenders in England it is unlikely he will not retain his services.

However, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, whose contracts also expire in the summer, are no long first team regulars and the club may want to rid the burden of their £100,000 a week salaries from the squad.

John Terry has an average passing accuracy of 90% this season, the joint highest in Chelsea’s entire squad.
