Frank Lampard: Would he get into this Chelsea side now?

As Frank Lampard scored his sixth goal of the season for Man City this weekend and the winner at Leicester, questions were asked of our decision to let him go. Jose Mourinho has had his say and reaffirms it was the correct decision.

Listen, as with every single one of you Chelsea fans around the world, I love Frank Lampard, respect him as a man and as the greatest Chelsea player of all time (in my eyes). For what he achieved here and the role he played in the most successful period in our history, there are never enough words to speak of just how great he was for Chelsea.

However, moving on as we have to do, football moves on and players come and go and it's the situation with Lampard's release back in the summer that has filled the pages of our papers in recent weeks. To this I ask you all the question:

"Do you think Frank Lampard would get into the Chelsea team now?"

At the weekend and after he scored again for City, Jose Mourinho was asked of Lampard and the decision to let him go. He responded by saying:

“It's his life, nothing to do with us.

He left Chelsea as a free agent and chooses his life, we can't complain about it. That's football.

My view is that, when you want to look forward, look to the future, and have people like (Cesc) Fabregas and (Nemanja) Matic and Jeremie Boga (a U21 midfielder), which are the next 10 years of the club.

The project is to prepare for the next 10 years, not for the next year. We made the right decision.

You can argue 'You have John Terry and Didier Drogba'. Different.

Drogba is a striker that is coming to help and support the team. John Terry is the best central defender in English football and it doesn't matter how old he is.

The nucleus of the team has to be developed and to have a big player like Frank we would stop the development of the other guys."

I do agree with Mourinho tough as it is though. You look at our strongest eleven and you wouldn't have Lampard in there as he is now compared to when he was at his peak. Maybe Hull last weekend would have been a time to give him a start playing next to Matic.

The boss makes a very valid point. We have to look at the project we have now and everything is focused on the next ten years as it was back in 2004 when Mourinho first arrived. The fact he even states "not for the next year" reaffirms the point.

Frank Lampard is a legend and is the greatest Chelsea player of all time but the simple fact is that as football has moved on, so has Chelsea and he wouldn't get into our side now on a regular basis so it was right that he left the club.
