Manchester United reject West Ham bid for Scott McTominay.

Manchester United have reportedly rejected West Ham United's first bid to sign Scott McTominay.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims the Red Devils have placed a £40 million price tag on McTominay — a figure the Hammers did not meet with their opening bid. The midfielder's future at Old Trafford seems grim.

McTominay (26) has been at Manchester United for the entirety of his career. He made his senior debut in May 2017 as a 20-year-old under Jose Mourinho and established himself as a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

McTominay has garnered 19 goals and five assists in 209 senior games for the Red Devils. But he has fallen down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag, who has signed Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount in midfield since taking over as manager.

McTominay, as a result, has been strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with his contract already in its final two years. It remains to be seen if West Ham return with another bid for him this summer.

The east London club have money to spend after Declan Rice secured a £105 million transfer to Arsenal last summer. Manchester United, meanwhile, are eyeing Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat as an option in defensive midfield.

"I love it" - Scott McTominay has said that he enjoys working with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Scott McTominay wasn't Erik ten Hag's first-choice midfielder last season. Both he and Fred were displaced from the starting XI by Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.

McTominay played 39 times across competitions last term, of which 23 were substitute appearances. But he had nothing but praise reserved for the Dutchman in an interview earlier this summer.

the Scottish midfielder told the club's official website in June:

"Obviously, the transition in terms of his style is very, very different to some other coaches, but, as I say, that’s football. He’s always having you thinking, and having you think about new ideas and stuff like that.
"It’s good, that’s the best way to be with football: open-minded and going into every game, if he asks you to do something, you do it to the best of your abilities and you try to learn it as best as you can. I think, for me, it’s great. I love it."

McTominay was absent from Manchester United's matchday squad for their 3-1 win against RC Lens yesterday (5 August). Journalist Samuel Luckhurst claimed that he missed the clash due to a small medical issue.
