Rumour: Manchester United target Mats Hummels attracts Barcelona interest

Sport, a Catalan newspaper, have suggested that Manchester United target Mats Hummels has become a key Barcelona target after impressing at the World Cup, where Germany have just reached the final having destroyed the host nation Brazil.

As reported by Sport Witness, both Barcelona and the newspaper are of the opinion that Manchester United could yet beat Barca to Hummels. They have previously made a bid of €25 million for the German international, and while that wasn’t enough,Sport expect the Old Trafford club to return with another move for the talented centre back.

Barcelona have begun to assemble different options in case a move for Hummels doesn’t work out, including Marquinhos of PSG.

Manchester United need to shore up their defence considerably after a season that saw them finish seventh. Van Gaal previously asked the Manchester club to sign him Hummels, and a player of his standard is definitely required after the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
