Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez said that he had the chance to sign Sergio Aguero when he was the manager at Liverpool. The Spaniard has a good relationship with the Argentine forward and even takes his help when he needs it.
"Sergio was helping me. We have a foundation in Liverpool. Sometimes I am asked for shirts to be signed to make some money and he was one of the nice people.” said the manager.
Benitez has revealed that Liverpool were given the chance to sign the striker when he was only a young player saying, “I was Liverpool manager, they offered him to us as a young player for big, big money. He signed for Atletico Madrid. He was a player that we knew. We were following him. We knew he was a very good player then.”
Benitez has now experienced managing at both ends of the footballing pyramid. In the first half of the season, he found himself appointed as the head coach of Real Madrid. But a failure to produce results and a lack of cohesion with his teammates saw his tenure cut short by the club.
Benitez was sacked by Florentino Perez, after unsatisfactory performances and replaced by Zinedine Zidane. The Real Madrid legend has somehow dragged the side back into the title race with a lot of help from Barcelona’s collapse.
In March, Benitez was offered the chance to coach Newcastle after the club sacked Steve Mclaren. They were in dire straits but the coach decided to take up the job anyway. Despite Newcastle United still struggling in the bottom three, the Magpies have seen a slight upturn in form in their last two games.
After defeating Swansea quite convincingly they managed to hold Manchester City to a 1-1 draw last night. But they couldn’t prevent Sergio Aguero from scoring his 100th goal in the Premier League.
Replays later showed that the goal should have bee disallowed as the striker was in an offside position when the free kick was taken. But the goal stood and Newcastle only got a point from the game.
